Connecting on a Human Level

I have been speaking quite a bit lately and it has been a pleasure to bring to mind the importance of human connection.

Like it or not, we are more connected to more people, in more ways than ever before; more ways than some of us even know about yet our human gift of connection, a gift which defines us as human, OUR VOICE and the ability to articulate ourselves through SPOKEN WORD is slipping away from us.

In this world of technology, the email, the phone, the whatsapp note, tik tok, threads and AI more sophisticated and smarter than any of us in this room, put together, we are finding it harder and harder to say what we feel, hold our own in the boardroom and stand in the spotlight to speak our minds, own our opinions and embrace our vulnerable truths.

I have dedicated most of my life to human communication, I’m fascinated by it. I will always be curious about the things we say and don’t say when we speak, what we say or don’t say when there are no words, I will wonder about the messages we send each other with a simple look in our eyes, a smile or a frown.

It is not enough to simply furnish ourselves with speaking tools, those tools only go so far because without integrity we will find that our speaking fails to connect with our audience, it will not resonate and it will not leave an impact.

When my clients come to me for help, I always tell them that the quickest route to improving their speaking and communication is to start with the person first.

Authentic communication, honest, human and powerful, is something which comes about when we are connected with our own sense of value and purpose and we honour it with integrity in body, mind and voice.

You do you. Before speaking, consider how you can choose to connect with others authentically. We bond and build powerful lasting relationships with people we trust and feel aligned with, so being yourself is key to successful human connection.

  • Think about what is valuable and important to you. What motivates you?

  • Appreciate your own strengths, develop a positive attitude and speak with care to yourself and others.

  • Decide how you want to be seen. Often, human’s judge and evaluate one another in the first few seconds before we speak; even if you don’t feel at your best think about how will you stay accountable and in control of presenting the best version of yourself.
